Youth Engagement Services
The YMCA of Central Ohio partners with schools, families and community organizations to help young people navigate challenges and stay connected to their education. Through safe, supportive environments and trusted role models, students receive the guidance, encouragement and resources they need to succeed.
Drawing on decades of experience in youth development, the YMCA helps youth build confidence, strengthen social-emotional skills and develop resilience toward academic and personal success. Whether facing academic challenges, behavioral concerns or other barriers, young people are empowered to build confidence, develop healthy habits and stay connected to their goals, helping them thrive.
Positive Alternative Learning Students (PALS)
PALS is a school-year program that provides a structured and supportive environment for students who benefit from additional guidance and encouragement. Through positive behavior coaching, social-emotional learning, academic support and family engagement, PALS helps students strengthen essential life skills, remain connected to school and achieve success both in and outside the classroom.
Non-Traditional Educational Learning Center (NELC)
The Non-Traditional Educational Learning Center (NELC) provides year-round support for students experiencing academic, emotional or personal challenges that impact their success in a traditional school setting. Through flexible academic support, licensed counseling, restorative practices and individualized planning, NELC helps students address barriers, regain confidence and continue progressing toward their educational goals.
Enrichment Opportunities
The experiences offered through Youth Engagement Services are designed to support the whole child. Across both PALS and NELC, students engage in opportunities that strengthen learning, build healthy relationships, foster resilience and connect them to the resources needed for long-term success.
Academic Success
Students receive academic support, guided study opportunities and enrichment activities that help them stay engaged in their education, strengthen learning skills and build confidence in the classroom.
Social-Emotional Growth
Through social-emotional learning, restorative groups and positive behavior coaching, youth develop self-awareness, resilience, healthy relationships and the skills needed to navigate challenges.
Mentorship & Positive Connections
Caring adult role models, guest speakers and mentors provide encouragement, guidance and meaningful relationships that help young people discover their strengths and envision their future.
Health & Well-Being
Physical activity and wellness opportunities promote healthy habits, stress management and overall well-being, helping youth thrive both in and out of school.
Family & Community Support
Ongoing family communication, resource connections and community referrals ensure students and families have access to the support systems needed to overcome barriers and achieve success.
Pathways to the Future
Through individualized planning and transitional support, students build the tools, confidence and direction needed to stay on track toward their educational and personal goals.
