Taking First Steps: How the YMCA Nurtures Brody’s Full Potential

Brock and Casey’s worry grew slowly. Their one-year-old son Brody wasn’t moving like other toddlers. While children his age began crawling and walking, Brody relied on an army crawl, never getting onto his hands and knees.

“He was just army crawling everywhere,” Brock says. “Kind of just not getting on his knees and elbows and hands. So we had those challenges of his movement and just kind of worried about that a lot.” “The mobility was very limited,” Casey adds.

The Browns connected with Help Me Grow, welcoming therapists into their home for one-on-one sessions focused on Brody’s motor skills and speech. Progress came slowly, but the environment at the Hilliard/Ray Patch Family YMCA made the difference. A regular in Child Watch, Brody flourished there in ways therapy alone hadn’t unlocked. The YMCA, with staff trained as youth development experts, encouraged exploration and independence like nowhere else.

“He was a lot more engaged in working with [our therapist] here because it was just a different environment,” Brock explains. Child Watch staff encouraged each step. “One day I let go… and he walked all about in the room. We screamed so loud,” recalls Oanh.

The breakthroughs continued. Brock arrived as staff rushed toward him. “Brody went down the slide, stood up, walked back to the steps and went down again. I was in shock,” he says. Casey watched too: “I couldn’t believe that Brody was walking. And not only just walking, he was walking on mulch.”

For the Browns, the milestone was proof of the YMCA’s expertise and the power of a community that nurtures every child’s potential. “One of the best things about the Y being a new mom is that I can trust the staff to take care of our boys,” Casey says. Today, Brody runs, climbs and explores, showing his little brother and every toddler around him what’s possible.
