The Y believes we are better together. We invest time and resources in our youth and we help them to become engaged, caring, and capable leaders. Leaders Club is how the Y helps to develop new leaders and the program is open to youth grades 6 and up. Leaders Club is a great opportunity for young people to identify and develop their inner role model. Most recently, 7 North Y Teen Leaders, along with hundreds of other volunteers from all over, gathered at The Ohio State University to support, congratulate, and cheer on athletes participating in the annual Ohio Special Olympic Games.
Teens from our Northland community and our YMCA was tasked with serving breakfast to 3,000 athletes at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday morning . This group from our community had the duty of being "huggers" (serving water, giving congratulations, and walking the athletes to the awards podium) during the Track and Field events, and assisting during the awards ceremonies at the Sawmill Lanes Bowling Alley.
The North YMCA Teen Leaders rose to the occasion in the sweltering heat and persevered for the greater good. The impact the Special Olympics had on our Y Leaders Games will be felt for years to come. When asked, many of the youth appear to have gotten more from their service than they believe they have given. Our teens gained a great deal of satisfaction from their “day of giving”. This is what the North Y Teen Leaders Club is all about: serving others and being impacted by the experience.
