This month’s member spotlight is focused on Jeff and Dane’ Davis and their daughter, Calise. Jeff is a member of the latest Livestrong class offered at the Grove City YMCA. To say that the Davis family are AMAZING would be an understatement. They are the epitome of a Y champion, they are true YMCA heroes.
Jeff was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung cancer while on military assignment in Alaska. “It took 8 long months before my husband was diagnosed. He had an original diagnosis of “pneumonia," and then “the mother of all viruses.” That year, Christmas was spent in the hospital in ICU with a heart catheter inserted to safely drain fluid away from Jeff’s heart and lungs. Dane’ also shared that “Jeff had never been a smoker, and when we told family I heard them ask "How is this possible? He is the healthiest guy I know!” Jeff and Dane’ moved to Columbus to be closer to family and friends and to also receive treatment at The James Cancer Center.
Even before Jeff’s Livestrong class began, Dane’ learned about the fundraising event, RideSTRONG. She made a commitment to raise and ride in Jeff’s name, hoping to raise $500. Without really knowing that the event was a SPIN class she continued to ask friends and family to contribute to her ride. Dane’ raised $1500.00, more than any other participant. Dane’ showed up the morning of the event, saw what was involved, and she and her teammates gave it their all! Never taking a class before, she followed all of the leads that the instructor gave and smiled the whole time!
Jeff is now a member of the class that is nearing graduation. When asked what he thought of the class, Jeff smiled and said that it wasn’t what he had expected. He has been challenged and continues to push himself with each new discipline taught.
This is the spirit of the Davis family. They are survivors. They are fighters. They give their all in everything they do.
