Here are some Get Fit and Stay Fit Tips from our Wellness Director, Valerie Baumann, and our Wellness Coordinator, Gloria Tarpley:
Focus on overall wellness, not just weight loss. If you just look at the scale for success it can be very discouraging! Try measuring your progress in other ways such as body measurements, how your clothes fit, your energy level and mood.
Set small goals to help you achieve your long term goals. For example, if your goal is to eat healthier in 2015 you will have more success if you start with a small progression. First try packing your lunch 2-3 days a week or limiting yourself to sweets twice a week. Once you have successfully completed this, keep with it and move onto the next progression.
Find a buddy or a group! Your chances of sticking with a fitness routine are significantly higher if you work out with a buddy or join a group class. Be accountable to someone other than yourself!
Set Realistic Goals- Don't strive for perfection, just aim for progress!
Follow a Routine- have a plan before arriving at the gym
Find something that you're going to enjoy doing- if you hate machines/weights, try a Group Exercise class!
Start out slow! If you haven’t been exercising, aim to hit the gym twice a week to start. That’s already a 200% improvement.
Balance strength training, cardiovascular exercise and flexibility training.
Don’t overdo it. Killing yourself every workout can lead to burn out and injury.
Not motivated one day? Set the treadmill on an incline and walk for 20 minutes. Just get moving!
Feeling overwhelmed by a 55 minute group exercise class? Just do what you can in class or leave after the first 20-30 minutes. After a week or two see if you can stay 10 minutes longer until you can complete the entire class.
