The entire gym and track will be closed from:
Tuesday 5/16 - Sunday 5/21
The Good News
We were recently informed that our damaged court is nearing the end of renovations!
The Bad News
Due to the fumes related to sealing the floor, both sides of the gym and the track must be closed to activity for the safety of our members; however, the racquetball courts may still be accessed via a brief walk through.
The closure will begin Tuesday 5/16 at 8am through Sunday closing 5/21. We appreciate your patience and understanding while renovating the damaged floor.

Based on YOUR feedback from our member survey, your new group fitness class schedule is here (on our website or in a printable PDF)! We worked hard to rework a schedule that we hope every member, both those involved in the group fitness community and those who may want to give it a try can get excited about!
The new schedule begins next Monday, January 2.
Group Fitness Schedule
Starting the first week of January, Stephanie will be officially joining our Group Ex community as an instructor! Although Steph is new to Group Ex, she is a familiar face at our YMCA!
Stephanie started at the YMCA in February 2016 as a Lifeguard. Since then, she has continued to grow within our branch to a Swim Instructor and Welcome Desk Leader. When asked why she decided to take the leap into Group Ex instructors she said, “ I was mostly a swimmer before working here and the group fitness classes really encouraged me to change up my routine, I hope I can do the same for members!”
Join Steph for her Total Body Circuit classes at 6am on Tuesdays and 11:30 on Fridays!
COMMITTED TO OUR COMMUNITY
Downtown YMCA Hours and Parking Updates
For the past 90+ years, strengthening community has been at the heart of our mission. As you know, parking in the Downtown area has been challenging for the past several months. In order for us to continue to serve our community to our greatest capacity, the following changes need to be made. Rest assured that we will continue to work to meet your health and wellness needs despite these changes.
We appreciate your passionate and continued support of the Downtown Y’s mission to healthy living and social responsibility. Be on the look out for new group exercise schedules at the first of the year. Our overarching goal is to offer the most popular classes at the most convenient times, within our new abridged hours.

Together, the staff team within the walls of 40 West Long St. have collectively, personally pledged over $10,000 in support of our programming, to help continue our mission's success into 2017!
Every year, as a not-for-profit, the YMCA works to reach an annual giving goal, which allows us to continue offering programs such as "Membership for All," housing initiatives, Livestrong at the YMCA, and many more to help our respective communities. This year- round campaign begins with the individuals who see the good work that we do, first hand, EVERY DAY: our dedicated staff.
Please join us in thanking a staff member for their heartfelt gifts of time, talent, and treasure as you see them around this holiday season!
The staff at the Downtown YMCA put up their annual Giving Tree for members to partake in now through December 31st.
How It Works:
Take an ornament off the tree with a donation request. Once you obtain the item(s) on the ornament, bring both the ornament and the items to Pro Shop desk for drop off. The items will go directly to our housing/ shelter residents and will greatly benefit them especially during this time of year. Every little bit helps!
In this edition of instructor spotlight, we are highlighting Irene Barnett, one of our longest running instructors at the Downtown YMCA! If you’ve ever taken one of Irene’s classes, you know her spunk and energy and it is contagious! Her motto is that she just likes to have fun, and every class it just that, fun! Of course, don’t let that fool you, her classes are a great challenge too!
Irene has been with the Downtown YMCA for 23 years, both as an instructor and as a trainer. Irene got her start in fitness in the early 80s instructing at a lady’s fitness franchise (yep, she wore the headband and leg warmers!) while still in high school. Later while attending Ohio State, she auditioned to become a Buck-I-Robics (what a great name!) Instructor for Ohio State students, faculty and staff. Irene got the gig and instructed there until her graduation. Later, she joined the YMCA Instructor family and the rest is history!
Irene currently teaches Cardio Blast with Vivian on Mondays and 12:30, and Cycling at Noon on Thursdays, as well as always being willing to help sub wherever she can. Irene is certified to teach just about everything including Yoga, Pilates, HIIT, TurboKick, Cardio Kickboxing and Zumba just to name a few.
Little known fact, Irene was born in Hong Kong, speaks Cantonese and immigrated to the US at age 9. We sure are grateful she is here with our Downton Fitness Family and are grateful for her two decades plus of service to the YMCA!

A little about our new instructor, Chara Williams:
"Music. Zumba. Me!"
Music moves you. It connects you. It connects people through emotion, memory or time. I've always had a strong connection with music. From music lessons, to playing a few instruments up through High School, to making the dance team, and having my dreams crushed when my Mother told me she couldn't afford it.
Although that was a huge disappointment at that time in my life, my love for music and the desire to dance always remained.
I learned about Zumba in 2012, and fell in love! Initially, because it was FUN! It was my interpretation of a hip adult dance class! I took my first class and immediately was hooked and wanted to be like the "dancers" (instructors) on the infomercials, and games.
In June 2013, I became an Instructor and a whole new person emerged. I lost over 20 pounds, healed emotionally, discovered my purpose and most importantly, my self worth.
Through my journey, I learned that Zumba is a two-fold blessing: a blessing of giving and a blessing of receiving. I'm giving what I love, and that love multiplies, and comes back to me. It is very humbling and satisfying to see my "dance friends" show up every week, with smiles on their faces, just to dance with me! It's because of Zumba! It's one big connection, and I've made so many wonderful connections because of it. Zumba creates energy. It creates connections, and it has connected me back to my long awaited dream, to dance.
So, shall we dance?"
We cannot wait for Chara to dance with us Downtown!
In this month’s instructor spotlight we at the Downtown Y want to honor Vivian James. She is a staple at the Downtown YMCA and an example of instructor commitment and enthusiasm. She might be small but her personality is huge! It comes as no surprise that this is why she has such a loyal following of members that has spanned decades.
Viv has been teaching for the YMCA for 26 years. She got her start in her fitness career at Scandinavian in 1986 which eventually turned in Bally’s. She came to the YMCA of Central Ohio when she and a mutual friend who worked at the Ward YMCA went to a fitness convention in California and she met Monica Turner (our featured instructor in August who is also our current Training Director). Monica found out that Viv worked downtown and she was looking for instructor help at lunch time. The rest, they say, is history!
Vivian has taught just about every type of fitness class other than Yoga/Pilates (which she says is too quiet for her—if you know Viv, this isn’t surprising!). She currently teaches Cardio Blast (Monday’s at 12:30), HIIT (Wednesday’s at 12:30), Step, BodyPump (Thursday’s at 11:30) and Muscle Conditioning. You can also find Vivian at the North Branch on Tuesday nights and Saturday mornings!
Viv loves going to fitness conventions with fellow instructors, workout out until there’s no workout left in them, then enjoying time with those friends and doing it all over again the next day! Vivian has been a part of the Downtown Y family for over the last 3 decades, and to say we are thankful for her service here is an understatement. Next time you see Viv, do us a favor and tell her how great she is!
Do you love BODYPUMP, GRIT, or CXWORX or group fitness in general? Have you ever thought… I think I could get up there and instruct? Or, I think I would really be good at this? We are looking for you! A Les Mills master trainer will be here Saturday, August 27 to host a master class and provide you with all of the information you need about all of the great reasons to become a Les Mills instructor! Don’t miss out on this opportunity! This is open to all members/ current instructors not already teaching a Les Mills class! For more information, contact firstname.lastname@example.org
Dan started out as an intern at the Downtown YMCA 2 and 1/2 years ago. After graduating from THE Ohio State University in 2014, Dan quickly took on different rolls with increasing responsibility within our branch. Dan started teaching HIIT class in the mornings in June 2014, after the previous morning instructor left and has been teaching ever since! Other than teaching HIIT, he is also a personal trainer, works the front desk, is a wellness coach and lifeguards as well as a lifeguard instructor! Outside of all he does at the Y, he also coaches baseball!
Please join us in celebrating all that Dan has done for us at the Downtown YMCA, and join him for one of his last classes this month! In August, Dan will be leaving us to get his Doctorate in Physical Therapy at Walsh University in North Canton, Ohio and will be leaving our branch. He teaches HIIT Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:00am. Do us a favor, when you see him either inside and outside of class, please congratulate him on all that he has done for us here at the Y, and wish him luck in all that he is going to do in the future! He will always be a part of our Y family, let’s pack his last morning classes and send him out with a bang!
Last month, we kicked off our “Downtown Instructor Spotlight” series in which each month we will pick an instructor that has had their own unique impact on our Downtown Y! This month we celebrate the one and only Felicity Hillmer. Chances are if you have ever taken group fitness classes here, you will recognize Felicity. She has been teaching at the downtown branch since 2000! Even better, she has been instructing within the Y, first in Tiffin Ohio, then Toledo, since 1991! If that’s not commitment to the cause, we’re not sure what is!
Felicity got her start as an instructor when her aerobics instructor asked her to put together a routine and teach for her while she was on vacation. Needless to say, Felicity caught the “instructor bug” and has gone through all the certifications to be an instructor ever since! Currently, Felicity teaches cycling, kettle bells, and yoga. Over the years she has also taught hi-low aerobics, step, kick boxing, Pilates and even a couple of water classes! When asked what her favorite is Felicity writes, “Don’t even ask me what my favorite is, that’s like asking a Mom to pick her favorite kid. Whatever I’m teaching at the moment is my favorite!”
Fun fact: From 3rd grade through law school, Felicity was an avid amateur actor. She was even a member of her high school’s Thespian Troupe! With Felicity’s bright and outgoing personality, this fun fact doesn’t surprise us at all! Join Felicity Monday’s at 5:30 p.m. for cycle, 6:30 p.m. for Power Yoga; Tuesday at 6:00 p.m for cycle; Wednesday at noon for Cycle/Kettle Bell; Thursday at 12:45 p.m. for Power Yoga; Friday at noon for Cycle AND (whew!) the first Friday of every month for a 90 minute cycle class at 5:00 p.m.! Yes, she really teaches that many classes one week—rock star is an understatement! We promise you nothing less than an extraordinary experience when taking Felicity’s class!
Every month we want to feature a different instructor that brings their own special brightness to the Downtown Y! If you’ve met Donna Oklok, she does just that!
Donna came to the Y in late 2008 as a member and was impressed with how friendly and encouraging everyone was, especially the instructors. She had been taking cycling classes for about four years at the time, and with a little encouragement from Lisa, Paul, and Sue (some of our other fantastic instructors!), she got certified to start instructing!
In Donna’s words, she can teach anything, so long as she doesn’t have to dance! She’s taught Muscle Conditioning, Boot Camp, HIIT, Water Aerobics, Pilates, Yoga and Core Conditioning classes. Also when other YMCAs need subs for Yoga or Pilates, she steps in when and where she can to help. She also plans to finish her 200 hour RYT with YogaFit this year (YAY!)!
In her spare time, she likes to read, write, run, appreciate art, music and cinema, spend time with her family, and travel. From Donna, “I love to help people make connections between their bodies and minds. It is awesome when someone gets into their "zone" and they are pushing themselves, making strides, and taking pride in what their bodies can do. Those smiles are everything!”
Donna is truly an asset to our branch and we are so proud to have her as an instructor! Come join Donna on Mondays and Wednesdays at 11:30AM for Pilates, or Friday at 6AM for Cycle and experience the Donna magic for yourself!

As the first location in the Central Ohio area to offer the OFFICIAL Licensed program, the Downtown YMCA is proud to announce the long-awaited arrival of: Broga® | Yoga for Men. Go, bros!
"The BROGA Mission" is to offer men real tools for coping with daily stresses and demands through an accessible yoga-based fitness program taught from a man’s point of view. Broga is for every “body,” from the beginner yogi to the professional athlete.
Yoga practitioners extoll the practice's effect on strength and flexibility, as well as peace of mind. But yoga has a reputation among some as not being a "real" workout... that ends NOW!
These unique classes combine traditional power yoga with functional fitness exercises. The practice builds muscle, improves balance and flexibility, reduces the risk of injury, and relieves stress. Strong, energetic and challenging, you’ll get that pumped-up feeling you get from working out and a deep flexibility and relaxation feeling from “working in.” Classes are taught in a straightforward manner.
You don't need to be able to touch your toes to get started, and Broga is right for students of all ages (16+ at this location).
COST: $24.99 Members/ $39.99 Non-Members
CYCLE: Monthly Registration (4, 75- minute classes)
CURRENT OFFERINGS: Wednesdays 6:30-7:45p -OR- Thursdays 12-1:15p
